Aim
To sensitize students towards language and literature learning.
Objectives

M. A. (English) Part -I Semestr I and II


Rationale for studying/teaching literature The students learnt to appreciate and enjoy a wide range of literary or creative texts and other related cultural forms.
1.It helped learners to develop a humanistic outlook on life. Through a close interaction with literary or creative works which portray a diverse range of human thought, emotion and experience, learners gain knowledge and understanding of the nature of human existence and of the world and the society in which they live.
2. The study of Literature in English has many practical aspects- ample opportunities are provided for learners to develop their creativity, sharpen their critical and analytical skills, and enhance their language proficiency.
3. Students’ awareness is broadened of the culture of different places where English is used and enhances their appreciation and understanding of culturally diverse society. The intellectual, aesthetic and emotional qualities, which are developed through studying Literature in English.

3. Interest among the students is developed to appreciate and analyze drama independently

4. Students awareness in the aesthetics of Drama is enhanced and they are empowered to evaluate drama independently

SEMESTER-II

Paper – 1.4: Literary Criticism and Theory


1) Students are introduced to the nature, function and relevance of literary
criticism and theory
2) Students are introduced to various important critical approaches and their tenets
3) Students are encouraged to deal with highly intellectual and radical content
and thereby developed their logical thinking and analytical ability
4) Sensibility and competence for practical application of
critical approach to literary texts are developed.

M. A. English Part-II-Credit System (Semester III & IV)

1) Students are introduced to major movements and figures of Indian Literature in
English through the study of selected literary texts.
2) Literary sensibility and emotional response are created to the literary texts and
implant sense of appreciation of literary text.
3) Students are exposed to the artistic and innovative use of language employed by
the writers.
4) Values are instilled and human concern is developed in students through
exposure to literary texts.
5) Linguistic competence is enhanced among the students.

1. Literary background, movements, important writers and works are discussedin the beginning. The selected texts are representatives of a specific genre.
2. These texts are compared and contrasted with their contemporaries from Indian Writing in English.
3. The relevant topics are discussed with the prescribed text.

Paper 3.2: English Language and Literature Teaching

1. Students are acquainted with different theoretical and practical aspects of
language and literature teaching.
2. Students are acquainted with different approaches, methods and techniques
of teaching
English language and literature.
3. Students are sensitized to the major issues in ELLT in the Indian context

Paper 4.2: English Language and Literature Teaching
Semester-IV

Students are acquainted with the basic issues in English language and literature teaching in the Indian context and equipped them with necessary abilities to become competent teachers of English. The students are made aware that behind every teaching activity there
is some principle at work. Students learn best by doing things on their own; hence their active involvement is ensured through seminars, groupdiscussions, presentations,etc. The teacher played the role of a facilitator and monitored the activities of the students.

Paper 3.3: Poetry in English
1. Students are introduced to major movements related to poetry
in English, works and poets through study of selected texts.
2. Literary sensibility for appreciation in students is created and
they are exposed to artistic and innovative use of language by writersand to various world views
3. Values are instilled and human concern is developed in
students through exposure to literary texts
4. Literary and linguistic competence of students is enhanced .

Paper 4.3: Poetry in English
Semester IV
Students are introduced to the socio-political and historical background of the prescribed period, the tendencies and trends dominant in the period, the stylistic features of the prescribed authors and the major characteristics of their works. Such
information provides students with background and necessary contexts. Students are encouraged to read 13original texts prescribed, literary histories and criticalworks. Exercises into literary pieces, practical criticism and analytical discussions
are conducted in the classroom for effective understanding. ICT methods to create interest and promote literary sensibility in students are used .

Paper 3.4: Drama in English
1) Students are introduced to major movements related to drama, works and dramatists through study of selected texts.
2) Literary sensibility for appreciation in students is created and they are exposed to artistic and innovative use of language by writers and to various worldviews
3)Literary and linguistic competence of students are enhanced.
